Visit to Nallinakkapuram

An event was conducted on 21 December 2023 in the Naillnakapuram resettlement village in Thellipalai, Jaffna. The event for which the proposal was prepared by Prof. Paul Rohan (Faculty of Arts) was approved by the Vice Chancellor and the transport facilities was provided by the university. A total of 34 participants from the university attended the event. The team reached the Nallinakapuram community center at 3.15 pm. The team was welcomed by the children and parents gathered in the center along with the parish priest and the village head; Mr.M.Inbarasa. The event was started with a song played by the university students. The village head then has spoken about their life and the struggles as people lost their home and culture due to the civil war. He has shared his messages to students from different community and wanted them to be acting as messengers for such goodwill messages to the people. He has shared the following with the students;

  1. Their life in the resettlement camp and village where they have found it difficult to get good food, sanitary facilities, religious practice, education, health and proper employment.
  2. The menace of drug abuse affecting the community
  3. The importance of education in changing the communities
  4. The role of younger generation taking up the responsibility and being the leaders to change this country as a better place with harmony
  5. The importance of the rights of the people to live in their own land and practice their own culture and the university students as the change makers

The event was continued with the performances organized by the village kids. The feedback from our students were highly positive and impactful. They were happy to help such initiative.
