Bridging Cultures through Food and heritage: A Cross-Cultural Dialogue Festival

The Kilinochchi event on October 19, 2023, aimed to foster cross-cultural dialogues between the staff and students of the University of Jaffna (UoJ) and Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (RUSL) through food, agriculture, and water management traditions. which was proposed by Dr.Suvanthini (Coordinator SRC/Faculty of Agriculture) The event began with a traditional Tamil welcome and an opening session in the Faculty of Agriculture auditorium. Dr. Mrs. T. Suvanthini, Faculty Coordinator for SRC/Agriculture, delivered the welcome address, followed by speeches from key dignitaries, including the Vice Chancellor of UoJ, Prof. S. Srisatkunarajah.

The event featured food stalls showcasing ten traditional Northern Province dishes, tree planting, and an exploration of traditional farming tools. Cultural and entertainment programs were presented by students, followed by a traditional Tamil lunch. Afternoon sessions included discussions on traditional agricultural practices, northern cascade management, and the cultural connection between water and Tamil literature. Mr. M. Sivamohan and Eng. K. Suthakar provided insights on local water management practices, while Mr. K. Arundaharan led a cultural performance.

The event concluded with a field trip to Kanakampikaikulam and Iranaimadu tank, certificate presentations, and the exchange of souvenirs, highlighting the successful cross-cultural exchange.
